Your coffee, your phone and the remote deserve somewhere flat to live that isn't the floor, the cushion or your knee. This folding lap tray, 25 cm across in solid bamboo, saddles the arm of your sofa with two hinged clamp legs and stays put while you settle in.

When the evening is over, it folds flat — no tools, no fuss — and slips away into a drawer or onto a shelf.

  • Round solid bamboo tray
  • Two hinged clamp legs for sofa arms
  • 25 cm across
  • Folds flat, no tools needed

There is nowhere to put the mug. The coffee table is out of reach from where you sit and the arm of the sofa is rounded and upholstered, so the mug ends up balanced on a cushion, wedged between your thigh and the armrest, or on the floor where someone will kick it. You have already cleaned coffee out of that cushion once.

Ledge™ gives the arm a flat top. Two slim bamboo legs are hinged underneath on metal pivots and swing down and inward, so their own weight and the weight of the tray clamp it to the armrest and hold it level. Nothing screws in, nothing clips on and nothing marks the fabric. It sits astride the arm as a bicycle saddle sits on its post, and it lifts off in one movement when you want the arm back.

The face of the tray is 25 cm across, with a raised lip all the way round, and the lip is the important part: a flat board on a sofa arm lets things slide to the floor, and the lip stops a mug moving when someone sits down heavily next to you. It has room for a mug, a phone, the remote and a paperback together. Because it is solid bamboo and not veneered board, the rim can be a single continuous curve with no seam to lift, and wiping does not make it swell.

It fits most standard upholstered arms of sofas and armchairs, about 10–20 cm wide, flat on top or gently rounded. When it is not in use the legs fold against the underside and it lies flat, in a drawer, behind the sofa or on the coffee table as a small serving tray.

Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it at once. Never soak it or put it in a dishwasher, and do not leave liquid standing in the tray overnight, because bamboo is laminated in strips and prolonged wet is the one thing that lifts a glue line. Mop up spills when they happen. If the surface looks dry or pale after a year, rub in a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil with a cloth and buff it off to bring back the colour. Do not put a hot pan or an uninsulated cafetière straight onto it, and check the pivot rivets now and then: if a leg feels loose, a gentle squeeze on the rivet head with pliers takes out the play.

Ol Matiriel

Solid laminated bamboo throughout, sanded and sealed clear, with two hinged bamboo clamp legs on steel pivot rivets. Verified size from the manufacturer's own dimension drawing: the tray is 9.84 in / 25 cm across the face, with a raised rim lip about 1.5 cm high and an overall span of about 10 in / 25.5 cm with the legs folded down. It weighs about 420 g. There is no plastic, no veneer and no adhesive-backed pad; the grip comes from the shape of the legs and not from a rubber surface that would eventually mark upholstery.

A side table for a room with no space for one

A small living room often has nowhere for a side table: the sofa is already against the wall and the walkway has to stay clear. This takes up no floor at all. Mug, book and phone are all within reach of where you sit.

On in two seconds and off in one

Swing the legs down and drop it over the arm, and it is done, with no tools, no screws and nothing that marks the fabric. Lift it straight off when someone wants the armrest, or fold the legs flat and put it away.

Saddle™ detail — solid bamboo, raised rim lip and folding clamp legs

Solid bamboo in one piece

It is laminated bamboo and not veneered chipboard, which is why the rim can be one unbroken curve with no edge banding to peel. The legs have steel pivots, the grain has a clear seal, and there is no plastic on it anywhere.

Solved an argument about the coffee table

Our lounge is too narrow for a side table and I kept putting my tea on the floor, which ended how you'd expect. This sits on the arm and holds a mug, my phone and the remote without any wobble. Arm of our sofa is about 15 cm and it's a snug fit. The lip is the bit that actually matters — my husband drops onto the sofa like a felled tree and nothing has gone over yet.

Measure your armrest first

Works perfectly on our two-seater but it is too small for the wide squared-off arm on the corner unit in the other room, so it's worth getting a tape measure out before ordering. On a normal arm it's rock solid — the legs are shaped so the weight pulls them in rather than splaying them. Bamboo is nicer in the hand than I expected at this price, properly sanded, no rough edges.

Also good as a plain tray

Bought it for the sofa but I've ended up folding the legs and using it as a little serving tray for two coffees as well, which I wasn't expecting. One thing: don't leave a wet glass sweating on it for hours, I did that and there was a faint ring for a day or two before it faded. Wipe it and it's fine.

Does it fit my sofa?
It suits upholstered arms about 10–20 cm wide, flat on top or gently rounded, which covers most standard two-seat and three-seat sofas and armchairs. Measure across the top of your armrest before ordering. It does not work on very wide, squared-off arms on large corner units, on hard wooden or metal arms with no give, or on arms that slope steeply, because the legs need a fairly level top to sit square.
Does it stay put, or does it slide?
It stays put, and the reason is the shape of the legs and not a grip pad. They hinge down and inward, so the weight of the tray and its contents pulls them tighter against the sides of the armrest, and loading it makes it more stable, not less. On a snug arm it does not move at all. On an arm at the wide end of the range it can rock very slightly when empty, and a mug settles it at once.
How much can I put on it?
A full mug, a phone, a remote and a paperback together, comfortably: the 25 cm face is sized for that. It takes a couple of kilos without trouble. It is not a dinner table: a full plate with cutlery and a glass is more than the surface suits, and a laptop is too wide and too heavy to be safe on a sofa arm.
Will it mark or damage the upholstery?
It should not. The legs are sanded bamboo with rounded edges and have no adhesive pads, rubber feet or screws, on purpose, because stick-on grip pads are what eventually leave a shiny patch or transfer onto pale fabric. On velvet or a deep pile you may see the pile pressed down where the legs sat, and that brushes out. If your sofa is very pale, lift the tray off now and then and do not leave it in one spot for months.
Can it get wet, and can it go in a dishwasher?
A damp cloth is fine. A dishwasher is not, and nor is soaking. Bamboo is laminated from strips, and prolonged wet is the one thing that can lift a glue line in time. Wipe spills when they happen, and do not let a cold glass sweat on it all evening, which can leave a faint ring that usually fades within a day. A thin coat of food-safe mineral oil once a year keeps the colour.
Does it fold away, and does it need assembly?
No assembly at all. It arrives in one piece with the legs already hinged, so it goes straight onto the arm from the box. When you do not want it there, the legs fold flat against the underside and it lies flat enough to slide into a drawer, behind the sofa or into a suitcase. Many people leave the legs folded and use it as a small round serving tray, which it does well.
