Juniper is a low table lamp with a hand-blown opal glass globe, an aged brass collar and a solid green marble base. The stone base gives it weight on a nightstand, and the opal glass spreads the light evenly with no visible bulb.

Your bedside lamp is the last thing you see before you close your eyes, and most are wrong for the job. Some have a bare bulb under a shade that stops halfway, so a bright line shines straight into your eye from the pillow. Others give the cold blue-white light that tells your body it is still mid-afternoon. And the lamp itself is hollow: you reach for it half asleep, catch the shade, and it slides across the wood.

Juniper™ solves both through its materials, not through features. The globe is opal glass, so the white is fused into the thickness of the glass and not painted on the inside. Light passes through the wall of the globe and leaves as one even surface at low brightness, with no filament, no hot spot and nothing sharp for a tired eye to catch. From the pillow it looks like a soft moon, not a bulb.

The base is not a stand but a 10 cm dome of solid quarried marble. Nearly all of the lamp's weight is in the bottom third, under the centre of the globe, so it does what a bedside lamp has to do and stays put. A sleepy hand, a duvet pulled over the nightstand or a cat's shoulder will move the lamp without tipping it.

At 26 cm tall the whole lamp sits below eye level when you lie down, so the lit globe is never in your line of sight as a taller shade would be. There are three stones, all of them quiet. Carrara white blends into a cream or oak room. Verde green is the one to choose if the lamp is to be the main object on the nightstand; its veining is deep and clearly green in daylight. Nero black looks the heaviest of the three and sits well against pale plaster.

Dust the glass with a dry microfibre cloth. If it needs more, breathe on it and wipe, and never spray cleaner near the fitting. Marble is porous and reacts with acid, so keep vinegar, citrus cleaners and descalers well away from the base; a damp cloth followed by a dry buff is all it needs. Wipe spills off the stone at once and do not let them sit, and stand the lamp on a hard surface, not a folded cloth, so the felted underside stays flat. Let the bulb cool before lifting the globe. Do not carry the lamp by the glass; lift it by the marble, where the weight is.

Ol Matiriel

A hand-blown opal glass globe shade, a thin turned collar ring in aged brass, and a base turned from one solid block of quarried marble in Carrara white, verde green or nero black, so the veining on your lamp is unique to it. The dimensions are the supplier's own measured figures: 26 cm tall overall, glass globe Ø 15 cm, marble base Ø 10 cm. Shipping weight is 5 kg, most of it stone. Corded and mains powered; bulb not included. The base is natural stone, so no two are the same in pattern or exact shade.

Weight kept low, light kept even

Opal glass spreads the light evenly, giving a soft glow with no harsh hotspots. The solid marble base keeps the lamp steady, even if it is bumped in the dark.At 26 cm it is low enough to keep the light below eye level, for a softer glow at night.

Cobble™ Marble Lamp glowing on a floating oak nightstand in a warm Japandi bedroom

Low light at the height of your pillow

On a floating nightstand it sends a warm amber wash up the plaster and a soft pool of light over the oak. That is enough to find a glass of water or read a page, and dim enough to leave on as you fall asleep. The globe sits at 26 cm, so the light reaches you from below your eyeline and not down into it.

Easy to find with your eyes closed

You do not have to aim. The globe is a 15 cm sphere and the brass collar is a firm edge for your fingers, so one reach finds it. With 5 kg of stone in the base, a hand reaching in the dark shifts the lamp and does not knock it over.

Three materials and no plastic

Hand-blown opal glass, a turned collar in aged brass, and a base cut from one solid block of quarried marble, which is why the veining on your lamp will differ from the veining in this photograph. Nothing is painted or moulded, and nothing looks like plastic up close.

Finally a lamp I can leave on

I read on my side and every other bedside lamp I've owned puts the bulb right in my eye at that angle. This one doesn't, because it's short and the glass is properly milky rather than clear with a white bulb behind it. Got the verde. It is greener in daylight than in the photos and much darker at night, almost black-green, which I like. Heavier than I expected — I had to lift it with two hands out of the box.

Survives a Labrador tail

Bought it after the last one went off the nightstand. This has been clipped twice and just slid a couple of centimetres. The marble is doing all the work — it's genuinely low and dense, not a hollow base with a weight in it. One thing worth knowing: it's small. 26 cm is shorter than it looks online, so if you want a lamp that fills a big empty nightstand this isn't it.

The white marble is warmer than Carrara usually is

I was braced for a cold grey-white because that's what marble bases usually are, and it's not — there's a cream cast to it that sits properly against a limewash wall. The veining is faint on mine, more of a smoke than a stripe. Bulb isn't included, which is fair enough but worth knowing before it arrives. I put a 2700K in it and it's exactly the colour in the photos.

Is the marble real stone, or a printed finish?
It is real quarried marble, turned as a solid dome and not a shell over a weight. The shipping weight shows it: 5 kg for a lamp only 26 cm tall, with nearly all of that in the bottom 8 cm. In practice it means the veining on your lamp is unique. The pattern, the density of the figuring and the exact depth of colour change from block to block, and the verde and nero in particular look much darker in low light than in daylight.
How bright is it? Can I read by it?
Up close, yes: it is comfortable for a page held at reading distance. It is not a task light and it will not light a whole room. The opal glass is there to spread the bulb's light and soften it, and that deliberately costs some brightness. Think of a bedside glow, a shelf in the evening or a hallway console. You choose the bulb, so brightness is partly up to you: a warm 2700K bulb of about 400 lumens gives the colour and level shown in these photographs.
It looks small. What size is it really?
It is small on purpose: 26 cm tall overall, with a 15 cm glass globe and a 10 cm marble base, so about the height of a wine bottle with the footprint of a mug. That is the idea. It clears a stack of books and stays below your eyeline when you lie down. If you have a wide nightstand and want a lamp with presence, choose a taller one, because Juniper™ will look like a small object next to a big bed.
Which stone should I choose?
Carrara white is the quiet option, a warm cream-white with faint smoky veining that blends into a cream, plaster or pale-oak room. Verde green is the statement piece: a deep bottle-green with pale crackled veining, clearly green in daylight and close to black at night, and the one to pick if the lamp is to be the main object on the nightstand. Nero black looks the densest of the three, nearly black with fine white threading, and it stands out most against pale walls and light wood.
I gat lait bulb i kam wantaim?
No, a bulb is not included. Choose a warm E14 bulb of 2700K or lower. Opal glass spreads whatever colour is behind it, so a cool white bulb makes the glow cold and flat. A frosted or opal bulb also keeps the surface even and hides the bright core.
How do I clean it without damaging the stone?
A damp cloth, then a dry buff, and nothing more. Marble is porous and is calcium carbonate, so acid etches it: vinegar, lemon, bathroom sprays and descalers leave a dull mark that cannot be polished out at home. Water rings from a glass left on the stone are the other common problem, so wipe spills away and do not let them sit. The glass globe is simpler: use a dry microfibre cloth, and if it needs more, breathe on it and wipe. Never spray anything near the fitting.
